Weekly Theme Photograph – Around My House

For this week’s theme “Around my House” I just wanted to gag. I HATE what I see around my house right now. I have boxes everywhere for things waiting to installed in the basement under construction. So many things that used to live in the basement now live EVERYWHERE with no home anywhere. The place is dusty and messy and lacking in any sense of order. PLUS, I’ve used this opportunity to completely give up on keeping things neat and orderly. I figure it’s just going to get messier so what’s the point? When you have a super neat husband who likes everything in its place, it’s weird to have such chaos. Anyway, so here is what my life and surroundings are like right now. Fingers crossed we’ll be done soon with construction.

Weekly Theme Photograph – My breakfast

This week’s theme is kind of funny to me because my daily breakfast is never “an event” itself, it’s part of another event, like making the kids’ lunches or working at the computer, or heading somewhere, so this week’s photo illustrates a photographer-mom’s breakfast at the computer. Ironically I’m probably the only one that drinks decaf teas in the morning, but I’m plenty hyper already. : )

Weekly Theme Photograph – Something New

For this week’s theme, I’ve got construction on the brain. The theme of “Something New” Can be interpreted so many different ways with construction but I had this great opportunity to capture this photo of new pipe meeting old inside the wall. I thought it was super cool.

Weekly Theme Photograph – Expressions

This week’s theme, “Expressions” immediately made me think of kids’ faces. They are so funny. It’s hysterical when they make many different expressions and emotions within 30 seconds. They can be throwing the biggest fit and you hand them something they like, all of a sudden – poof! Fit gone. So when I had to take photographs of the “graduating seniors” at my son’s preschool and used him for a test subject as I was getting everything ready, the amount of expressions he busted out in a span of 3 minutes made me think of this theme.

Weekly Theme Photograph – Signs

I had a photo session recently with a very professional 7 year old actor. See my blog post about our acting headshot session to see some of the headshots. One of the shots that came from the session stuck with me. In between very “headshoty” poses he busted into this pose:

It was so funny because it was such a 7 year old thing to do. And I loved the fact that he felt comfortable enough with me take his 7 year old moment. I also loved that his mom looked and me and we laughed. How great that although they were there to get a job done, she allowed him to be himself when he needed to be. He became goofy with a few poses and then got right back down to business. Loved it.

Pro at 7

I had so much fun photographing this little actor. He is 7 and is appearing in the new Wes Anderson movie, Moonrise Kingdom (check out the trailer)

First off all, he was such a pro that with each snap of the camera, he changed his position and changed his expression. Not many adults know instinctively to do this. Wow, I say to myself. Plus, he is incredibly photogenic, and I don’t just mean cute, which of course he is. I mean, when you look at his photograph, you look straight into his eyes. He projects so much through his eyes and really knows how to connect with the camera. I’m really impressed with his ability to engage the audience.

AND, his mom and sister were awesome and fun and I can’t wait to get my camera on the rest of the actors in the family!

I’m not usually one to photograph beautiful flowers but this little lone guy in my front yard moved me to use him for this week’s theme photograph – “Color”

Weekly Theme Photograph – Innocence

For the weekly theme of “Innocence” I decided to retitle the theme “Innocence?” The question mark makes all the difference in the world. This photo is my daughter. She is 7. It always cracks me up when I get in her a “badass” pose with her Y camp shirt on where the one visible word is “respect.” ah-hahahahaha

Weekly Theme Photograph – Movement

For this week’s theme, movement, I went with the ever-popular photos of the dog. But here’s why. We just got a dog right before Thanksgiving. It was ill-timed with our trip to Virginia to visit family, and ill-timed with the massive and noisy basement construction we are doing. It was an accidental adoption, but that’s what happens when you go to a shelter. She was the first dog we saw. She wouldn’t even come out of the room to go outside. She just lay down and shook in fear. Only one week before she had been rescued from a high kill shelter in South Carolina.

I carried her outside and after 20 minutes of holding her and another friendly dog coming to say hi she relaxed a little. She was so sweet and great with the kids – we adopted her that day. It’s been a wonderful few months. She is a real asset to our family. She is really great with the kids and they love her very much.

But here is why it’s relevant to this week’s theme. Yes, dogs run and around and that could be construed as the movement theme, but I used her because of what she represents to me. Part of the reason I wanted a dog was to make our family less sedentary and become more of an outdoor family. I find that we spent a lot of time indoors when we really should be outside playing, walking, running. None of us have weight issues, but the need for movement goes beyond the need to be in shape. For me it’s more about engaging with your surroundings. I don’t feel like I do that very much. So….here’s to Olive, our beautiful little dawgy that is getting me outside!
