There is a difference between the college recruiting timeline for female and male high school athletes. Often female athletes looking to play sports in college need to create their high school sports highlight videos up to a year earlier than their equivalent male sport athletes. While a male athlete can, for most sports, create their highlight video from their junior year (depending on the season of the sport) a lot of female sports should have them from their sophomore year. This can vary by sport and by level. There are still some college coaches recruiting for the lower competition spots from the current seniors, while others commit certainly by junior year. Regardless for when your video needs to be completed, you should start figuring out your plan to get high quality film starting freshman year. While you won’t necessarily use freshman footage, although again, that depends, you want to get the kinks out so your footage is good, shot wide enough in the frame to see everything the coach needs to see, but close enough to see what the athlete is doing. Good footage is really vital to showcasing your high school athlete for college recruiting. If another parent on the team takes high quality footage, offer to pay them for their work if they will share the footage with you. If you are going to invest in equipment, do some research to figure out what is best for your sport. Make connections now so that when you need good footage, you have it all worked out.
